LEXINGTON — Barbara Jean Furr Barber, 63, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Davidson County on Nov. 23, 1944, to Horace Franklin Furr and Mary Girleta Crotts Furr. She was a former employee of Link Taylor and a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held at Freedom Baptist Church at 2 p.m. today with Pastor Clyde Akers officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
A memorial has been established and donations may be sent to Barbara Barber Memorial, c/o Bonnie King, 1441 Rhodes Road, Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Connie B. Boner
CHARLOTTE — Connie Bailey Boner, 86, of Charlotte, formerly of Lexington, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at Liberty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte after several years of declining health.
She was born on May 31, 1922, to Nathan L. Bailey and wife, Tilmont Beck Bailey. She was a 1942 graduate of Lexington High School and a 1945 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
She retired from the Davidson County Health Department in 1987 after more than 37 years of service as a public health nurse. She received multiple awards during her tenure.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mercy School of Nursing Alumni Scholarship Fund, 701-B Forest Point Circle, Charlotte, N.C. 28273.

Marilyn Bowman
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Marilyn Elizabeth Grindstaff Bowman, 51, of 791 Noahtown Road, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Thomasville Medical Center.
She was born on March 19, 1957 in Guilford County, a daughter of the late Claude Grindstaff and Dorothy Jane Penley Grindstaff. She was a homemaker and was a member of Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Gary Brown officiating. Interment will be in Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the home of the brother, Bunny Grindstaff of 243 Caple Drive.
Memorials may be directed to the Christian Life Freewill Baptist Church, 799 Old Highway 29, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

D. Kermit Cloniger
THOMASVILLE — Mr. D. Kermit Cloniger, 94, a resident of 9 Charter Place, died Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2008.
He was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Lincolnton, N.C., a son of the Dorus Howard Cloniger and Nancy Fern Withers Cloniger. Educated at George Washington University, Duke University and High Point University, he was active in auto sales, property development and banking throughout his life. Mr. Cloniger was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, obtaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He moved to Thomasville in 1946, and has served on many civic organizations, including the T. Austin Finch Foundation board of trustees and the High Point College board of trustees.
Mr. Cloniger has served as president of the Thomasville Rotary Club, president of the Thomasville Chamber of Commerce, Community Foundation president, a member of the North Carolina Committee on Recreation under then Gov. Jim Holshouser and president of the Davidson County Economic Development Commission. He was mayor of Thomasville between 1957-1959. He was instrumental in the creation of Lake Thom-A-Lex. Mr. Cloniger was also instrumental in founding the Thomasville Crime Stoppers program, and was its first chairman.
In May 2001, Bank of North Carolina constructed a new operations center in Thomasville, which bears his name.
Mr. Cloniger is a recipient of The Order of the Longleaf Pine Award, which is the highest civilian honor that can be granted by the office of the governor.
He was a man of integrity, wit and commitment to helping others – a man’s man with a soft and giving heart. He was always willing to help a stranger or a friend. He had a strong faith, love and humor. He was the rock of his family – beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He always placed honesty first in all of his business and personal life. He loved his family and taught them to be honest and truthful in lives. He will be forever remembered for his dedication to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Mr. Cloniger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, an elder in the church, and had taught adult bible class for over fifty years.
To many people in Thomasville he was known as “Mr. Thomasville.”
He was first married to the former, Edith Crowder, who preceded him in death. He later married Elizabeth Roser, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Douglas K. Cloniger and his wife, Carole, of Thomasville and D. Stephen Cloniger and his wife, Priscilla, of Huntersville, N.C.; Six Grandchildren and Eight Great-Grandchildren; Sisters, Sylvia Cloniger Parker and her husband, John, of Titusville, Fla. and Lorette “Nookie” Cloniger Porter of Charlotte, N.C.
Funeral service was held on Monday at 2 p.m. in Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville with the Rev. Michael E. Lamm and the Rev. Benjamin Williams officiating. Burial followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Cloniger remained at the J.C. Green & Son Funeral Home until taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will other times at the home.

James “Jim” Conrad
THOMASVILLE — James R. “Jim” Conrad, 77, died on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at his home.
He was born on June 24, 1931, in Davidson County, to William H. Conrad and Hattie Hege Conrad. He retired in 1993 from Coca-Cola in Winston-Salem after 33 years of service, 12 of those years were in Shelby, N.C. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-54.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville with the Rev. Chris Clontz, the Rev. Brian Darr and the Rev. Ardis D. Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant UMC cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Refurbishing Fund, 6516 Old Greensboro Road, Thomasville, N.C. 27360 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

SOPHIA, N.C. — Mrs. Betty Jean Welborn Gerringer, 70, of Woodfield Court Extension, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at her residence.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1938, in Guilford County to Joe Taft and Grace Harrison Welborn. She was a graduate of Trinity High School and had been employed at Mr. Jeans and American Chair and Table of Randleman. She had attended Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Briggs Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

LEXINGTON — Hab Lamuel Reno, 40, of Foy Ave., died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Reno was born on Dec. 14, 1967, in Forsyth County, to Donald Ray Reno Sr. and Christine Una Burkhart Reno.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Leonard Road Baptist Church, where he attended, by the Rev. Tommy Hepler. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery.

LEXINGTON — Tony Randall, 44, Watkins of Sunnyside Drive, died Friday, June 27, 2008.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1964 in Davidson County to Elmer Eugene Watkins and Alice Kepley Watkins. He was employed as a truck driver at Reich Grading Company in Winston-Salem.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.

LEXINGTON — Dr. Laura Elizabeth Fritts Young, 90, formerly of Fairview Drive, died Friday, June 27, 2008, in Lexington Health Care.
Commital service was held at 10 a.m. Monday in Forest Hill Memorial Park, with a memorial service that followed at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, where she was a charter member, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. J. Randy Hall officiating.
