THOMASVILLE — Jewell B. Batten, 79, a resident of 805 Liberty Drive, died Saturday, April 26, 2009, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born on April 10, 1929, to Linzie Gaines and Allie Mae Dixon Bray. She was a retired supervisor at Carolina Underwear and a lifetime faithful member of Park Place Baptist Church. Funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of David and Cathy Louya, located at 369 Arbor Trail in Thomasville. Jones Kennedy THOMASVILLE — Jones Franklin Kennedy, 92, died Friday evening, April 25, 2008, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born in Guilford County on July 1, 1915, to Everett Lee and Mary Jones Kennedy. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of The First Baptist Church in Thomasville, and retired from Tomlinson Furniture of High Point. Mr. Kennedy was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class (SS). He was a recipient of five Battle Stars, the Combat Action Ribbon with three Gold Stars, an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, a Navy Commendation Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He married Dorothy Deaton Kennedy in September of 1954, who preceded him in death on May 14, 1984. He was also preceded in death by step-sons, James “Jim” Rutherford, Leon “Pete” Rutherford and Beryl Rutherford; and two sisters, Ella Elberly and Madge Gordon. He is survived by two step-daughters, Priscilla R. Swaim of Thomasville, and Patricia R. Shima and husband, Tom, of Chesterland, Ohio; two step-sons, George Rutherford and wife, Patsy, and Cecil Rutherford and wife, Bonnie, all of Thomasville; one sister, Dolores Blaker of Philadelphia, PA; and one brother, Dexter L. “Deck” Kennedy of Thomasville. Graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bynum Orr officiating. Mr. Kennedy will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until the hour of the service. No formal visitation will be held. Littrell LEXINGTON — Elaine Hobbs Littrell, 55, of Moore Drive, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Brian Center of Lexington. Elaine was born in Davidson County on Dec. 25, 1952, to Hoyle Ray Hobbs and Rita Kochert Hobbs. She was a homemaker and member of Coggins Memorial Baptist Church. Memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Coggins Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverends David Shaffer and Lewis Johns officiating. Private graveside will be held at Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home on Moore Drive in Lexington. Fourth Avenue, died on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center after declining health. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Robinson and Dr. Ray Howell III officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Donna Faye Spoone THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Donna Faye Bennett Spoone, 59, died Friday evening, April 25, 2008, at her home. She was born on Dec. 29, 1948, in Guilford County to James Carlton Bennett and Mildred Samuels Bennett. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmie Bennett. She was employed with Guilford County School Systems at Ferndale Middle School. On Nov. 29, 1969, she married Richard D. Spoone, who survives of the home. Also surviving are her daughter, Christine Westmoreland and her husband, Anthony, of Thomasville; mother, Mildred Samuels Bennett of High Point; sister, Bonnie Turner of High Point; two grandchildren, Zachary Westmoreland and Abigail Westmoreland; and a niece, Katie Greene. The family received friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Truett was born on May 9, 1916, in Cherokee County to Nelson Raxter and Harriet Elizabeth Watson Raxter. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was married to her husband, Vincent, for 70 years before his death on Dec. 11, 2007. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alvin Pope officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will see friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was born on April 9, 1916, to the late William Henry and Ida Hedrick Sullivan. He was a member of Emanuel Reformed Church of Thomasville and was a member of the brotherhood there. He was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and member of the choir. He was a retired maintenance mechanic with ABEX of Salisbury. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Oakdale Baptist Church in Spencer with the Rev. Richard Gross officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
