LEXINGTON — Mary Ann Honaker, 38, of Washburn St. in Lexington, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at her home. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Donna Reaves LEXINGTON — Donna Charlene Johnson Reaves, 47, a resident of Leonard Road, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Lexington Memorial Hospital. Donna was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 25, 1960, a daughter of the late Jimmie Johnson and Shirley Hodge Johnson. She was a homemaker. Funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel with preacher Clyde Akers officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of the daughter, Jamie Kavarnos, 1832 Ridge Road, Lexington, N.C. 27295. Gerald R. “Jerry” Hill THOMASVILLE — Mr. Gerald R. “Jerry” Hill, 64, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 13, 2008. He was born on Jan. 6, 1944 in Davidson County to the late Howard Rowan Hill and Virginia Pettit Hill Bowers. He graduated from Thomasville Senior High School in 1962 and was employed for 42 years as personnel manager at Thomasville Furniture Industries (Furniture Brands). He was a very active member of Southgate Baptist Church, where he was the sound technician and a member of the outreach and church sign committees. He was also a member of the Singing Americans in the early 1970s and had a great love for gospel music, as well as a board member for United Way for four years. One of his favorite past times was fishing. Surviving are his wife, Teresa Hill of the home; daughters, Tammy Finn and her husband, Bill of Raleigh, and Whitney Hill of the home; son, Jordan Hill of the home; step-father, Frank D. Bowers of Thomasville; brother, Douglas H. Hill of Lexington; and two grandchildren, Liam and Ashley Finn. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Southgate Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Garner officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr, Hill will remain at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the home. Online condolences may be sent to www.jcgreenandsons.com. *** Virginia Saunders THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Virginia Fields Saunders, 79, a resident of 110 Hillside Drive, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at her home. Born in Belmont, N.C. on Feb. 7, 1929, to Norman D. and Eula Whitworth Fields, she had made this area her home since 1950 when she moved from Carthage, N.C. She was a graduate of Woman’s College in Greensboro and was a retired administrative assistant for Burlington Industries, Holton Furniture and Sears. Her activities were many and she enjoyed cooking, staying physically fit, studying history and traveling. The child in her always enjoyed attending the circus when it came to town. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Janet in 1953; her brother, Phillip Fields; and her husband, Norman Wesley Saunders. Surviving are her stepmother, Vera Fields; sisters, Norma Ann Conoly and Linda Taylor of Carthage, and Malinda Drew Carr of Miami, Fla.; brothers, James H. Drew of Augusta, Ga., Norman Fields of Carthage and Charles Fields of Kernersville. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Jennie Wilson COLFAX — Jennie Lee Cross Wilson was born on Feb. 16, 1923, in Davidson County to the late William and Bettie Owens Cross. She attended the local public schools and enjoyed working a variety of jobs in several different occupations. She was a faithful member of New Smith Grove Baptist Church, where she held many positions and served on several auxiliaries. On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, an angel was dispatched to Alston Brook Rest home to escort Jennie Lee Cross Wilson from this earthly life to her heavenly place. She had enjoyed 85 years with her many family and friends. Jennie leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted husband, Henry Lee Wilson; a son, Rudolph “Rudy” and his wife Christine Wilson of Greensboro, and Judy Carol Wallace of Greensboro; two sisters, Ruth Roberts of Lexington and Foscene Hill of Wilmington, Del.; one brother, Harden Cross and his wife, Hazel Cross, of Lexington; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at New Smith Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Shoaf officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from Gilmore Funeral Home. Arrangement entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Service. *** Dr. Julius Howell, M.D., 93, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. WINSTON-SALEM — He was born in Thomasville on April 14, 1914 to Cyrus Maitland and Lillie Mae Ammons Howell. He received his Bachelor of Law degree from Wake Forest University in 1935 and a Bachelor of Science in 1940. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943 and completed his early surgical training at that institution. In 1949, he returned to Bowman Gray School of Medicine and completed a residency in Otolarygology. In 1952, he began his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at The Hospital University of Wisconsin. His training was interrupted by a tour of duty in the United States Army, where he served as a Captain until 1953. During his military service, he was the personal physician of Syngman Rhee, President of South Korea. Dr. Howell received the Bronze Star Medal, among other distinguished medals for meritorious service in Korea in connection with military operations against an armed enemy during the period of June 1953 to July 1954. Dr. Howell completed his plastic surgery training at New York Hospital at Cornell University and returned to Bowman Gray School of Medicine to become Instructor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1957. At that time, he was the second plastic surgeon practicing in the entire State of North Carolina. Dr. Howell was promoted to Professor of Surgery in 1972 and served as the Chairman of the Section on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 1973 to 1979. He was named the Professor Emeritus of Plastic Surgery at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He entered into private practice in 1984 in Winston-Salem. Dr. Howell was a member of many professional organizations. He was nationally renowned for his contributions and expertise in the medical-legal field. Of great enjoyment to him, was a medical-legal course he taught periodically at Wake Forest University School of Law. He chaired the Medical-Legal Committee of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina and the Constitution and Bylaws Committee for the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He was a member of the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and The American Association of Plastic Surgeons. In 1995, The Julius Ammons Howell Chair in Surgery was established in his honor at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. As a physician and community servant, he contributed significantly to the welfare of the people of Winston-Salem and the State of North Carolina. His medical career spanned over 50 productive years. His literary contributions were extensive as an author to many medical and medico-legal textbooks, journals and articles. Dr. Howell dedicated his long life to the benefit and compassionate care of his patients, while embodying true devotion to his family and faithfully serving the medical profession. Loved by his patients, admired by students and staff, and respected by colleagues, Dr. Howell was recognized for his many contributions to medicine on the state and national level, his kindness to all he encountered and his outstanding surgical skills. He was a man and doctor of the highest integrity and ethic to his fellow human being. Dr. Howell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Southern Howell; his three daughters, Anne Howell Gray of Atlanta, Ga., Karen Ammons Howell of Charlotte and Robin Rhodes Howell of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Julia Howell Gray of Chapel-Hill, N.C. and Atlanta, Ga., and Alexander Gladesborough Gray of Charlottesville, Va. and Atlanta, Ga.; his son-in-law, Bernard Gray of Atlanta, Ga.; and his twin brother, Dr. Charles Maitland Howell of Winston-Salem. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church with Dr. David Hughes officiating. A private family graveside is planned. With deep gratitude, the family wishes to thank all of Dr. Howell’s caregivers, each of whom contributed greatly to his wonderful and accomplished life in later years. He lived each day embracing the best of life’s offerings while validating the respect and dignity with which he chose to live his life. He was the true embodiment of a gentleman, husband, father, grandfather, brother and doctor. Salem Funeral Home is assisting the family. *** Janet Croft ASHEBORO — Mrs. Janet Atonsen Croft, 83, passed away Friday, March 14, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born in Chicago, Ill. on Jan. 27, 1925, to the late Kai John Carl Antonsen, Gertrude Evensen and, stepmother, Josie May Garland. Following high school graduation, she worked in the Foreign Department of the Continental Bank in Chicago. In 1946, she married Bob E. Croft and moved to Stillwater, Okla., where she worked while her husband completed college. Her husband’s career took the family to a variety of cities and in each new city Mrs. Croft created a nurturing and loving home for her family and friends. Mrs. Croft was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro, N.C. She was the secretary for Randolph Technical Community College in its infancy and later was the secretary and bookkeeper for the Randolph County Sheltered Workshop. She volunteered for the Red Cross and a State Literary program. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob E. Croft and son, Kenneth Robert Croft. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Croft of Pffafftown, N.C.; her son, Douglas Edward Croft and his wife Jeane; daughter-in-law, Debbie Lavasque Croft; and grandchildren, Cameron Elizabeth, Adam Taylor, Allison Lindsay and Wilson Robert Croft. The body will lie in state at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home on Friendly Road in Greensboro. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday at 2 p.m. at Westminster Gardens, 3601 Whitehurst Road in Greensboro. At 4 p.m., there will be a memorial service and visitation at River Landing at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Home. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Kate B. Lee, 63, died on Saturday, March 8, 2008, in Stone Mountain, Ga. She was born on March 24, 1944, in Henderson, N.C. to Ruby and Henry Hursey. She was raised in Pittsburgh, Pa., but spent the bulk of her life in Thomasville. She was a beautician and private duty CNA. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Collins, and a son, Daryl Allen. She is survived by her children, Dana Allen and wife, Wanda of Atlanta, Ga., Lamont Allen of Atlanta, Ga., Dion Allen and his wife, Penny of Atlanta, Ga. and Jeanine Scott and her hubsand, Patrick of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Natria Allen, Octavia Allen, Mary Allen, Shana Allen and Melissa Allen, all of Bristol, Pa., Dana Allen Jr. of Thomasville, Aeyis Allen of Florida, and Tyga Lee, Christian Scott and Dionna Allen, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of great grandchildren. She recently became a member of Liberty Church, Inc. in Stone Mountain, Ga. under the leadership of Past Marcus Martin. Memorial service will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. John AME Zion Church.
