DENTON — Mrs. Dallie Mae Floyd Davis, 83, of Cap Ingram Road in Lexington, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center following several years of declining health. Mrs. Davis was born on Nov. 11, 1924, in Davidson County to Alson and Maggie Hedrick Floyd. She was a 1942 graduate of Southmont High School, where she was valedictorian of her class, and a retiree from Edgewood Apparel. She was also the last living charter member of Floyd Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir and a former Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Davis, in 1967; a grandson, Ian Michael Davis; a sister, Dallas Floyd; a brother, Dolan Floyd; and infant twin brothers. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Floyd Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Dickens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. James Hodge DANVILLE, V.A. — James Avery Hodge, 93, of Abingdon Place, formerly of 140 Robinwood Place, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Born Nov. 14, 1914, in Surry County, N.C., he was the son of the late James Avery Hodge and Dora Mae Cook Hodge. He was married to Ora Lee Dalton Hodge on June 3, 1939, and before his retirement, was the owner and operator of Two Rivers Exxon Station. Prior to that, he was the owner and operator of Schoolfield Shell Station. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Carol Hodge Hudgins and her husband, Barry; one son, James E. Hodge and his wife, Lindre; three grandchildren, Lee Hudgins of Danville, Ric Hudgins and his wife, Merrill, of Madison, V.A. and Kathy Patterson of Danville; six great-grandchildren, Jordan, B.J., Rachel, Richard and Rebecca Hudgins and Holly Patterson; special extended family members, Elene Farlow, Jim and Patty Jackson and family, Steven and Joseph McNees and Jonathan Patterson; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Virgil and Garvie Hodge, and three sisters, Thursa Williamson, Vina Triplette and Mary Wishon. Funeral service will be held at Schoolfield Baptist Church on Friday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. David Turbyfill. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. Townes Funeral Home at 215 West Main Street in Danville is in charge of arrangements. *** Virginia Saunders THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Virginia Fields Saunders, 79, a resident of 110 Hillside Drive, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at her home. Born in Belmont, N.C. on Feb. 7, 1929, to Norman D. and Eula Whitworth Fields, she had made this area her home since 1950 when she moved from Carthage, N.C. She was a graduate of Woman’s College in Greensboro and was a retired administrative assistant for Burlington Industries, Holton Furniture and Sears. Her activities were many and she enjoyed cooking, staying physically fit, studying history and traveling. The child in her always enjoyed attending the circus when it came to town. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Janet in 1953; her brother, Phillip Fields; and her husband, Norman Wesley Saunders. Surviving are her stepmother, Vera Fields; sisters, Norma Ann Conoly and Linda Taylor of Carthage, and Malinda Drew Carr of Miami, Fla.; brothers, James H. Drew of Augusta, Ga., Norman Fields of Carthage and Charles Fields of Kernersville. Funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Marsden Kitley, OSL THOMASVILLE — The Reverend R. Marsden Kitley, OSL, 74, a resident of E. Sunrise Avenue in Thomasville, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Hospice Home at High Point. Rev. Kitley was born on May 12, 1933 in Troy, N.Y., a son of the late Ralph Kitley and Bertha May Wheeler Kitley. On June 11, 1933, he was baptized by the Rev. Ernest Ryder, and was confirmed on April 2, 1944 (Palm Sunday) by the Rev. Milton Lavery. Rev. Kitley was a 1951 graduate of Lansingburgh High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his B.A. from High Point University in 1964 and his Master of Divinity in June of 1967, from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was ordained as a Deacon on June 10, 1965 at the Western N.C. Annual Conference. On June 8, 1967, he was received as Full Connection of the Western N.C. Annual Conference, and on June 10, he was ordained as an Elder. The churches he served were Mt. Vernon Charge (Mt. Vernon, Mt. Pleasant and Mt. Gilead) in 1967; Mt. Carmal and Ebenezer in 1968; Mt Carmel and Greer’s Chapel (Lexington) in 1969; Mineral Springs in 1970; Mt. Tabor (Winston-Salem) as an associate in 1974; The Pinnacle Charge (Pinnacle, Mt. Zion and Chestnut Grove) in 1976; Double Shoals (Lawndale) in 1980; Central Spencer in 1983; Shiloh (Granite Quarry) in 1986; and First United Methodist Church in Thomasville from 1989 until he retired in 1995. After retirement, he served as interim pastor for the Cid Charge and was appointed Pastor Emeritus of the First United Methodist Church in Thomasville. In 2007, he was appointed interim pastor for First United Methodist Church in Thomasville. He was a member of the Thomasville Civitans Club, Lions Club and a Volunteer Hospital Chaplain. He had also been instrumental in starting the Volunteer Chaplaincy Program in Rowan County and Thomasville. He formerly had served as a PTA President. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Johnson. He was married to Julia Garner on June 12, 1964. In addition to Julia, he is survived by two sons, Ralph M. Kitley II and his wife, Loretta Rowlan Kitley, of Summerfield, and Barry S. Kitley and his wife, Wendy Jane Kitley, of High Point; a sister, Nancy Jane Wisbauer of Thomasville; and six grandchildren, Zachary Rowland, Nicholas Rowland, Raven Kitley, Elizabeth Kitley, Victoria Kitley and Virgina Kitley. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Thomasville with the Rev. Cris Uren, Dr. Harold Warlick and the Rev. Douglas Butler officiating. Interment with military rites will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church Cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Thomasville and at other times at the residence. Mrs. West was born in Forsyth County, N.C. on June 19, 1936, to Jesse James Hatcher and Leona Virginia Farley Hatcher. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Junior West on March 19, 2007; brothers, Lacy Hatcher, Edward Hatcher, Kenneth Hatcher and, twin brothers, John Hatcher and Albert Ackers. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Sloop officiating. Burial will follow in Byerly Family Cemetery. Jim Bennett LEXINGTON — James Lewis Bennett, 88, formerly of North County Home Road, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Brookstone Retirement Center after declining health. Mr. Bennett was born on May 23, 1919, in Jackson State, Ga. to John Manning Bennett and Rachel Mallard Bennett. He was a retired auto mechanic and a member of the Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Clara Cheek Bennet; three brothers, Arnold Bennett, Ernest Bennett and George Bennett; and four sisters, Mary Wigginton, Vestie Wilson, Lena Lance and Ann Adams. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Beane officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
