Opal Albertson Dorsett, 88 of Carolina House of Lexington and formerly of Cunningham Brick Yard Road, received a special present when she went home to be with The Lord on Christmas Day. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church where she was a member. The service will be conducted by Dr. Keith Carroll, the Rev. Leon Thompson, and the Rev. Carroll Upton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Dorsett was born March 3, 1919 in Guilford County to Ernest Albertson and Loretta McCauley Albertson. She was very active in, and loved her church. At her church she worked with children all of her adult life; conducting children’s programs and working in the nursery. She was preceded in death by her husband Winfred Dorsett, a brother Kermit Albertson, and a sister LaRue Copple. Surviving are five daughters: Diane Crouse and husband Wayne, Virginia Whittington, Gladys Houser and Evelyn Fritts, all of Lexington, and Peggy Hunt and husband Owen of Trinity; two brothers, the Rev. Ralph Thurman Albertson of Thomasville, and Darrell Albertson and wife Inez of Archdale; two sisters, Viola Greene of Asheboro, and Loretta Hunt of Winterville; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. today at the church. He was the son of Julian and Betty Lee Nail Herderson of Thomasville. He was born on Dec. 17, 1953, in Thomasville of which he was a resident most of his life. Mendal was instrumental in founding an Organization called THP, the Triad Health Project. His involvement was a great accomplishment. He enjoyed working with flowers, interior decorating, and helping others. He is survived by his parents: Julian and Betty Nail Henderson; his sister: Julie Walls and husband Jerry of Thomasville; one neice: Tiffany Gordan of Thomasville; one nephew: Christopher Walls of Thomasville; and several great nieces and nephews. No services are planned for Mr. Henderson. Betty Smith Ms. Betty Jean Duncan Smith, 66, of 513-B Afton Street in Thomasville, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, in the Thomasville Medical Center. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. in Friendship Baptist Church and burial will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Billy Lee Southern Jr. Mr. Billy Lee Southern Jr., 82, a resident of 922 Hasty School Road in Thomasville, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 24, 2007, in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Guilford County, a son of the late Billy Lee Southern and Martha Jane Moran Southern. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II, and retired in 1983 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and Instructor in the Naval Reserves. He was a member of the Pilot Lions Club and the Pin Traders Club, The FRA – Federal Reserve Association and the High Point VFW, where he served as secretary. He retired in 1996 from Davis Milling Company of High Point. Mr. Southern was a member of West End United Methodist Church. On Dec. 9, 1946, he was married to Faye Hutchens. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Faye Hutchens Southern of the home; daughters, Martha Lambeth of Thomasville and Susan Key of Pinehurst, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jason Deaton and his wife Angela, Chauncey Lambeth, Nick Louya and his wife Deebra and Terri Locklear; and two great-grandchildren, Ramah Locklear and Nylah Locklear. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in West End United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Stein and the Rev. Mike Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Southern will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Born July 12, 1925, in Rowan County, he was a supervisor at North Carolina Finishing Company where he had been employed for 50 years before retirement and he served his country in the U.S. Marines, a veteral of World War II.
