Eagles get one more shot at SHS

Sports Editor Zach Kepley - Anyone who doubted the Central Carolina Conference was the best in the state should reconsider. That’s because East Davidson and Salisbury will play for a trip to the 2-A NCHSAA state finals today at 5 p.m. in the regional finals held at the LJVM Annex.
Having met three times already this season with the Lady Hornets winning two of them, each team knows what the other can do, and close games have been a reoccurring theme when the two tangle.
“There is no secret’s between us and Salisbury,” said East coach Terry Allmon. “I think the key will be rebounding and whoever takes care of the ball.”
East has an entire cast that works together to achieve their goals, but Salisbury runs everything through the hands of Shi-Heria Shipp. She has the ability to create for herself from anywhere on the floor, and will be a primary target for the Eagles defense.
“She is a tough matchup because she penetrates so well and she can shoot,” said Allmon. “We are not going to stop her from scoring, but if we can just slow her down we will be okay.”
Anna Freeman has found herself in foul trouble when playing the Hornets, so keeping her on the floor is important. She will draw a lot of attention down low being the tallest player on the floor, but she feels the double-team coming and makes smart decisions when passing the ball out of trouble.
East has been in this same position for the last two seasons, only to see Smoky Mountain knock them out of the playoffs. Having the bad luck they have been dealt in the regional finals, Allmon is trying to figure out how to get his team past the mental aspect of the game, convincing his ladies that they can get to the finals.
“That is a tough question, and we just hope the third time is the charm,” he said. “We have knocked on the door twice — this time we hope to knock it down. This team has a lot of heart, and for some reason they just rise to the occasion.”
