“Overall I think we are playing okay and we will see where it goes from here,” said a happy East coach Terry Allmon afterwards. East scored the first 21 points of the game, and it was evident that the starters would not see much of the floor at all. All five of them scored in the opening quarter, helping each other to build a 23-2 lead at the end of one. Fourteen more points went up on the home side without an answer from the Lady Cavaliers, before Cree Turner netted a pair of free throws to stop the run. East would lead 45-8 at the break. One last stretch on the floor by the starters helped extend the lead to 59-14, capped by an Elizabeth Merritt layup. Allmon then called off the dogs and the bench saw the floor the rest of the way. Even with many of the key players resting comfortably on the pine, the lead continued to grow. Haley Everhart’s two free throws ended the scoring, and it also put ever Lady Golden Eagle in the scoring column. Anna Freeman led East with 15 points and Merritt added 10. Jaquantia Wilks had 15 for North. Ahead on Wednesday is the fourth meeting of the season between East and Ledford. By beating the Central Davidson Spartans 43-23 in their first round contest, the Lady Panthers get another crack at their archrival. The Golden Eagles have won all of the previous meetings with the last one being a blowout, but Allmon is smart enough to know that it will not be quite so easy this time around. “I’ve already cautioned them in the locker room that we better play our best game of the year, because they will be waiting for us and we will have to play our best. They are a very good team.” Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Lexington, with a trip into the finals on Friday to the winner. Whoever advances from that one will likely get to battle No. 1 seed Salisbury for the title. Sports Editor Zach Kepley can be reached at 472-9500, ext. 234, or at kepley@tvilletimes.com. |
