Three incumbents unchallenged in state house races

Now that the filing deadline has passed, it is apparent that there will be no primaries necessary for candidates running this year to represent Davidson County in the N.C. General Assembly. In fact, there appears to be only contested election. Republican Rayne Brown, a Davidson County home-health-care worker, is challenging N.C. House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman for his seat in State House District 81.
“I hope that this is going to be a positive campaign for both of us — with the stress being placed on the issues,” Rayne Brown said. “There are certainly differences between the two of us on many issues. For the first time in four years, we’re going to be able to give the people from District 81 a choice. I think it’s important for people who have been in power a while to also be held accountable for their votes on certain issues and their policies.”
Holliman, who owns Speedy Printing in Lexington, is running for his fifth term in the N.C. House. Two years ago, the Democrat was reelected without Republican opposition. Last year, he originally ran for Speaker of the House. Later the Democrat withdrew his candidacy for that position and launched his successful campaign for House majority leader.
“I plan to run a campaign based on my representation over the last four terms for the people of Davidson County,” Holliman said. “I expect to run a very active campaign, let the people know what I’ve done and where I stand and see where we go from there.”
Republican incumbents Jerry Dockham of N.C. State House District 80, Larry Brown of N.C. State House District 73 and Stan Bingham of N.C. State Senate District 33 have no opposition from either party.
“I’m honored,” Dockham said about the fact that he has no Republican or Democratic party opposition for reelection, “I’m excited about going back to Raleigh. As a matter of fact, I think I’m more excited now about serving in the General Assembly than I was 18 years ago when I first went to Raleigh. I just think it’s so important that we have experienced leadership in Raleigh, especially at this time in the history of our state.”
Larry Brown’s district includes Wallburg, Abbotts Creek and Gumtree, as well as a large portion of Forsyth County.
“I certainly am appreciative of the support I always get out of Davidson County,” Larry Brown said. “It’s people have been very hospitable and supportive of my efforts. My door is always open to anybody who would like to drop by and see me, and I’ll be glad to put anyone on my newsletter list.”
Larry Brown’s Raleigh office phone is (919) 733-56-07. The Kernersville resident, who is running unopposed for his third term, can also be reached on his cell phone at 972-4256 and at larrybr@ncleg.net.
Bingham, a resident of Denton and publisher of The Denton Orator, is running unopposed for his fifth term in the State Senate. The Republican said having no formal opposition by the filing deadline made him “very happy.”
“I’d rather be working for my constituents than campaigning,” Bingham said. “We do a lot of comparison with other states and we see where some of them are billions of dollars in shortfalls and looking at serious cutbacks. Even though we are having some tough times, North Carolina has fared extremely well.”
