Herman Keith Overcash, principal of South Davidson High School, was arrested by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Thursday for allegedly having a sexual relationship on two occasions with a 17-year-old female student.
Overcash, 54, of 2444 South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, has been charged with two counts of felony sexual activity with a student by a school administrator. DCSO detectives made the arrest with the help of the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Overcash was brought before a magistrate, receiving a $250,000 secured bond. He was placed in the Davidson County Jail pending a court date of May 12.
Davidson County Schools (DCS) Superintendent Fred Mock said Friday in a phone interview his school system has been working on the matter with the DCSO, and he relieved Overcash of his duties on Wednesday. The following day, Mock said he gave DCSO Capt. Tony Roberson all of the school system’s findings, based off of a school investigation.
“We are shocked,” the superintendent said. “This type of offense is a very serious thing to occur for a school. My role and function is to be certain those students and faculty understand that their self-esteem and their identity should not be hampered by this event.”
“They are a strong prideful school and should remain so,” he continued. “We are, as a school system, very sensitive to the needs of students who are victims of such abuse.”
Overcash has been employed with the school system for more than 30 years. He started his career with DCS at Wallburg Elementary School, and later had stints at North Davidson Junior High School, Extended Day School and Ledford High School as a teacher.
After being named assistant principal of Ledford High School in 2002, he moved to South Davidson in 2004.
Assistant Principal Billy Hunt is now serving as interim principal.
“Mr. Billy Hunt is a highly qualified administrator,” Mock said. “I know him personally and professionally. I’ll state my reputation on his ability to lead that school on the high road.”
