- Even though Gov. Mike Easley has urged municipalities and water suppliers to mandate voluntary water restrictions, Thomasville City Council will consider lifting them Monday at its regular monthly meeting.
“I personally think … when we have a problem, that is when we should be restricting things,” City Manager Kelly Craver said Monday at the City Council briefing. “Right now we don’t and we haven’t for a large number of months.”
While Thomasville has been under voluntary water restrictions since September, the lake has been above an inch or two since the second week of December. As of Monday morning, Lake Thom-A-Lex, the water supply for Thomasville and Lexington, was two inches above pond.
Craver told other city officials last Wednesday that he thought Thomasville should lift water restrictions, and he would contact Davidson Water and the City of Lexington to see if they would follow suit.
“Lexington seems to be following our lead,” Craver said. “They don’t have [a problem with lifting the voluntary water restrictions.] If we do, they will. If we don’t, they won’t.”
After hearing Craver discuss the water restrictions, City Council members decided to put the item on its regular agenda.
“I respect the governor, but he doesn’t run a water system,” Councilman Ricky Murphy said.
In other business:
• Mayor Joe Bennett will read four proclamations, which include: Honoring the East Davidson High School girl’s basketball team for winning the State 2A Championship, proclaiming May as National Preservation Month and Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, as well as proclaiming Spring Litter Sweep 2008 for April 19 to May 3.
• A public hearing will be held to grant or deny approval of a 65-acre subdivision off of Ferndale Drive. Due to Thomasville’s planning board rejecting the request for Archdale-based R & B Investment Properties to have an R-10 residential district, the City Council will now have to vote on the item. The subdivision is expected to bring more than 100 homes to the area if approved.
• Council will consider an ordinance dealing with pool rooms, bowling alleys and gaming tables. The current ordinance mandates that bars have to shut down its pool tables at midnight. If passed, the new ordinance will allow the establishments to operate the pool tables until 2 a.m., in line with the ABC laws of selling alcohol.
• A request for proposal and award of contract to Wetherill Engineering for Valley Road Bridge will be considered. The scope of the contract will be for bridge inspection, evaluation and repair recommendations, as well as seeking public involvement.
• Due to a break in and damage at the City Cemetery, City Council will consider amending the 2007-08 Cemetery Trust Fund Budget to appropriate insurance proceeds of $4,758.
• Under its consent agenda, City Council will consider an award of demolition bid to 627 Liberty Drive and 211 Warner Street.
• An agreement between Sprint/Nextel and the City of Thomasville will be considered for Linker Communication and Motorola to move the City’s frequencies. The agreement will mandate that Sprint/Nextel to pay for all the expenses Thomasville incurs in the project.
• Council will consider naming the new storage building at the City Cemetery in the memory of Alberta Strickland and Eddie Pryor.
• An item that would add two alternate members to Thomasville’s planning board will be considered by City Council.
• Council will consider an appointment to the City Beautification commission, as well as two to the Historic Preservation Commission.
