With a tremendous amount of rain in the last few weeks, Thomasville officials are now discussing lifting voluntary water restrictions.
Thomasville and Lexington, which feed off of Lake Thom-A-Lex, have been under voluntary water restrictions since September. City Manager Kelly Craver told the Chair City’s Public Services Committee Wednesday afternoon that Lake Thom-A-Lex is six inches above full pond. Craver said the lake has been above an inch or two above since the second week of December.
“My thought process is that if you look at something long enough, it is like it is not there,” he said. “Right now we have plenty of water and we are still telling people to conserve water. We may be perceived as crying wolf.
“Then when we have a real problem, we start to ask for voluntary water restrictions,” he continued. “You are saying you didn’t say anything in the spring when you had a full lake, and when the lake is down a foot, then you have upped your concern.”
Making sure the City of Lexington and Davidson Water also go under voluntary water restrictions, Craver said he was going to see if they would also remove them.
“It doesn’t make sense for us to be on restrictions and them not,” said Councilman Ricky Murphy, chairman of the Public Services Committee. “They’re just sucking the thing dry. That is why we work together.”
The committee passed the item and it will now be taken into consideration to be added to the City Council’s agenda at its briefing on Monday. The City Council will have their monthly on April 21 at 7 p.m.
